How much can you save? Use our calculator!

Owning an electric vehicle costs less than a comparable gasoline-powered car, according to a new report from Coltura. Coltura promotes environmental policies and produces cultural works aimed at ending the use of gasoline in the United States, and advocates for policies to phase out the sales of new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2030

The organization's EV Savings Index shows that the average American driver who drives 15,000 miles a year can save $1,396 a year by switching to an EV. That includes fuel and maintenance costs.

The EV Savings Index calculates the difference in costs for owning an EV and a gas-powered car. The index takes into account factors such as the price of gasoline, the cost of electricity, and the vehicle purchase price. You can also choose to include expected maintenance costs.

The data compiled by Coltura shows that the savings from switching to an EV vary from state to state. The states with the highest potential savings, when fuel and maintenance savings are combined, are:

  • Washington: $1,777

  • Nevada: $1,565

  • Oregon: $1,512

  • California: $1,471

  • Idaho: $1,391

We encourage you to explore the EV Savings Index to see how much you could save by switching to an electric vehicle. You can access the calculator and interactive map on our website.

In addition, EVA and our local chapters of volunteer members will begin sharing estimated EV savings for the states in which the chapters are located. Look for the local updates here and on EVA social media profiles.
